Twittering tweets with Twitter

February 17, 2009 · 1 Comment

I have been using Twitter for some time now. Even some of my non-tech savy friends are using it.
picture-1

There’s nothing quite like Twitter. It’s a web site where you can post up to 140 characters. Facebook’s status updates come close but not quite. Here’s why i think twitter is far better.

First of all you don’t have to use the web interface to post updates. You can send a text message to a special twitter number. (the reason for the max 140 characters probably).  Also there are litterally thousands of twitter apps for the desktop. But where I find it most useful is on my phone. There’s hundreds of different iPhone twitter apps, but the one I prefer is twitterfon. I can post updates wherever and whenever i need to. Search the public timeline within the app itself and of course check updates from the people I’m following.

photo

As you follow more and more people, your screen fills with a scrolling display of their  jokes, recommended links  and a lot of “what I’m doing right now. As of now Twitter is still for early adopters and geeks but this is changing. Large companies use twitter for news updates like the NY Times, DR Nyheder , CNN and Starbucks. Also celebrities are embrasing twitter, Britney Spears, Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore and the most powerful man in the world President Barack Obama

So what exactly is twitter? A powerful news tool?(twitter was the first media to report the Hudson plane crash) or just another Internet time drain or a useful way of sharing links and to stay in touch with friends(and followers)?

Twitter is whatever you make of it. Use Twitter the way you want, or don’t.

Gaming heaven with Nestopia

January 14, 2009 · 2 Comments

I recently installed Nestopia on my mac. It is a great emulation software which let me play all the classic NES 8-bit games, like Super Mario Brothers, Zelda, Journey to Silius and so on. Only problem is that i had to play with my keyboard, and it’s really not the same. Therefor i went hunting on the World Wide Web for a solution.

NEStopia

The solution was a NES-controller modded to a standard USB gamepad. It works great and looks even better.

Of course i could have used any other gamepad, but it just ain’t the same.

Christmas in tha Ghetto and stuff!

December 29, 2008 · Leave a Comment

As promised, here comes the story about Christmas in Whistler – the Danish way!

On the 24th – yay, that’s Christmas for us…not the 23th, not the 25th, no the 24th – Christmas eve’s day (that’s what we call it) came to town! And finally my Christmas mood decided to show up. I started out by enjoying the fact that I had a white Christmas for the first time in many, many years, and went skiing – skiing, not snowboarding – with Simon and Jakob, some of the Danish guys. Ohhh, what a sight! skisteeze

After some preeeeeetty steezy(!) rides we downloaded to their house in the woods. Here my Christmas mood really got a boost of dimensions. The house is occupied by 8 Danish guys and girls and they had done a great job with the Christmas decorations. As we got there the place was empty, so we went out to play in the snow and found a lovely Christmas tree – no Christmas without a tree! We got “home” and had a nice time eating Danish candy and just chilling while the house started smelling a lot like Christmas, as the guys (quite impressed by their cooking skills) started preparing the Christmas dinner. As I was not going to spend the evening there, I left in the afternoon and went to the Village to meet up with some of my friends from UBC for a couple of Christmas beers. “Merry Christmas – have a good one!” And I was off to Danskerhusene (Danish houses) in Creekside – Two houses with 14 people living in each. Danish every one of them! They had prepared a huge traditional Christmas dinner with duck, potatoes, brown potatoes, red cabbage, gravy, and ris a la mande for dessert. Sweet, I tell you! I was only 2 hours late – yes, yes…just to keep it the Elin way – blame it on the snow, the tourists and a blocked Highway 99 :/

We all ate in the one house and as dinner was over we went to the

other house to open presents, dance around the tree and party the night away – And so we did!!

On the 25th I woke up on a couch in Danskerhuset – lovely! The house was still full of people and looked like there had been a war going on, so Jakob and Emma from the woods (the other side of Whislter, actually) and I went to eat breakfast at the diner, and for some reason we ended up in the Village, where we began to drink again! Something about tradition and that we usually have Christmas Lunch on the 25th…I think! People started joining us as they came down from the mountain and to make a long story short we went to bed at three o’clock…in the morning! After a visit to the skatepark, a lot of nachos, a falling favourite Nisse (Danish little Christmas guy), and a “never give up” spirit!

I’m not gonna lie to ya…I was beached on the 26th!!

DRIP DRIP DRIP…

December 27, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Ahhhh…waking up to the lovely sound of rain dripping…INSIDE! Yup, that’s how our day started today! Thumbs up for the canadian cardboard houses! After a great Christmas time and a returning roomie the house looked – to put it mildly – like shit! So we had to get up and clean the place to make it look decent for when the landlord comes – if he comes, who knows?! Just perfect for a morning person as me. Have to make something of the day! What makes it even better is that we got up so early just to sit and do,well…nothing! For some crazy (Canada!!) reason my ski pass doesn’t work from the 27th till the 30th, so now, when the snow is finally here, I can sit at home…and listen to the pouring water and look at the snow outside. Ohhhh, and I can spend my time online…sooooo that’s what I do! If I don’t drown I’ll write a wonderful post about Danish Christmas in our little Danish Whistler Ghetto! That is a promise from me to you! Now…I have to empty the buckets, cans, bowls, cups and coffe maker thing so we have a tiny chance of surviving this disaster!

BREAKING NEWS!

December 17, 2008 · 3 Comments

A terrible, horrific, and extremely scary natural disaster stroke Denmark this morning at 6:20 am local time! Yes, a natural DISASTER! People in Denmark did not need their alarm clocks this morning, no they were woken up by a giant earthquake…

G I A N T earthquake! True story!

Maybe I’m protected by the Powers from above anyway. Just when I thought they were fooling around with me – thinking about the ridiculous amount of snow here! Back in the Tsunami days I were supposed to go to Thailand but ended up in Cuba instead – and now…I’m in Canada just as this terrible incident happens in Denmark! Coincidence?! Don’t think so…

My thoughts go to all the victims and their families! May you all have strenghts and hope to get through this! My co-writer, Jever was actually right in the middle of it. I have talked to him this morning and he survived and is in good spirit considering the surcomstances. Still too shocked to write about his experiences, though. He’ll need a little time to get back on the right track!

To get an impression of how huge the consequences of the disaster are here are some stories from the survivors – directly translated from TV2’s homepage;

Cat squashed to death in closet

“My beloved cat, who always lies in my closet is dead. It was sleeping in the closet, as it does every night, but because of the quake the closet toppled, and my cat was trapped – it was crushed. I’m absolutely miserable.”

Slept with toy gun in the bed

“I was home alone and was awake in my bed as the quake started. Cds, books, and plates crashed. I huddled as a hedgehog and cried like crazy as long as it lasted – afterwards I was so afraid that I couldn’t get up and turn on the lights. I was afraid it was an explotion or a terrorist attack, eventhough I had a feeling it was a quake, but still slept with a toy gun in bed the rest of the night”

Closet fell on top of a turtle

“My turtle Mimi died in the earthquake when my giant closet fell on her. Tragic incident, which I didn’t think was possible to happen in lovely Denmark”

My sister fell out of bed

“My sister fell out of her bed. We knew right away that it was an earthquake, since we have experienced it before in Wales and Scotland some years ago.”

Picture caused cut in head

“A 1 x 1,5 meter picture fell down and hit me in the face. It caused a bump and a couple of cuts in the face”

Aftershock at 8:20?

“At 8:20 my dog was fidgety again. It was looking at its water. I saw that there were some movement in the water in the bowl. Could it have been an aftershock?

Parraot fell in its cage

“I woke up as my parrot flew around in its cage and fell to the bottom three times”

Thought the elevation bed was broken

“We have an elevation bed and all of a sudden my bed started to jump and the bookcase was shacking. We thought the electrics in the bed had gone wild, so I got out of bed, and shortly thereafter I heard in the TV that we had had quakes”

Remember the feeling of fear

“After 10-15 minutes I almost started to doubt that I really had experienced it, and the sound which woke me up I almost can’t recall anymore, but the feeling of fear and unscertainty I remember – and the totally unreal experience that your robust brick house “moves around”.”

Thought the neighbors were doing it

“I was sitting at my desk writing on my computer as my lamp, computer, and table started shaking. I started to laugh and thought, what is my neighbour doing now – said out loud, that they shoul keep it down a bit’”

Pheasant started crowing

“Woke up at a weird booming and shacking. I thought right away that it was an earthquake. The pheasant cock in my garden started to crow. It always does that when the marine has shooting excercises on the ocean or when the thunder rolls”

Thought it was a ghost

“In our appartement Stadion Alle 44 3 tv in Aarhus this early morning an old English cuppord suddenly started to shake and clatter – I thought it was a ghost”

HomeSickness

December 16, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Right now, I ought to be working on my cheat sheat for my last final tomorrow morning – it’s not even half way done! But I seriously can’t concentrate at all. Of several reasons!

First of all, I suffer from the always returning UBC fatigue – hit Vancouver last night, and since then I have been dead tired. Don’t know what this place does to me. In the mountains my energy level is wonderfully high and I have no problem getting up in the morning – maybe the fact that up there I get up to ride all day, contrary to down here where I get up to study has something to do with it, but still! Hmmm!

Second, the crappy snow, I must admit, makes me kinda depressed now. I know it’s being a bit of a spoiled kid, but I just really, really wanna ride – and so I do – but…the feeling you get after a wonderful day in the snow is just missing a bit up there sometimes…especially because the weather forecast doesn’t infuse much hope so far!

Thirdly, I have a lot on my mind at the moment! The time at UBC is almost over and a lot of practical stuff needs to be sorted out – haven’t really done much so far, so – as usual – I’m gonna be under a lot of time pressure. Don’t know if I ever learn to manage my time and get things done before the very last minute?!!

Last, the thing that makes my concentration level just as low as the snow accumulation the past 24hours is a bad, bad case of homesickness! Yup, I really miss my family right now! Never before have I had this strong feeling! Christmas is coming and I’m not gonna be with them – sitting here, alone in my tiny room at UBC thinking about all of them together at home in our Christmas decorated home makes me wanna go home, so bad! My parents sent me a Christmas package with some candy, Christmas decorations (yeah,my mom loves that stuff), the traditional Christmas calendar, my Christmas presents (promise I haven’t opende them yet…maybe ;) ), and a Christmas card…I know it was supposed to make me happy – of course it did – but it also did the exact opposite – WoW, I WANNA GO HOME!! Just for a week…Say hi to family and friends. Have a lovely Christmas with all of them, and then go back here for New Years! Ohhh,if only dreams came true!

Ohhh, and this is pretty funny…Who said procrastination?!!

Livin La Vida Whistler

December 15, 2008 · Leave a Comment

WoW! Quite a lot has happened in Denmark’s, MJ’s, Huggybear’s, Little Brown Bear’s, Danni’s, Maja’s, Elin’s or Whichever-Name-You-Pick’s life since the last post! I’m on Whistler time now – and it’s fast! Time’s been flying by like the Concorde in it’s heydays since I got up-here.That, I guess, is a good thing, because it means that I’ve been having a great time…But then again, when time flies, things that are not welcome also come closer. Like friends starting to leave Canada…that sucks! Won’t think of that now, though…

Wupti Wooooop!

To follow up on the last post, I can tell you that there is now snow in the village and it looks a bit more like a “real” ski resort! But…We NEED more! MUCH more! It’s freakin fuckin cold and the skies are blue – way too blue! Almost like the slopes…Yah,cause ice has this blue-ish color, right?! Yup,it’s extremely icy…Not good, not good! Ice makes me scared, duuuuude! ArgH! Okay…no more complaining! M U S T keep a positive mind, eventhough it’s a bit hard at the mo…Feels like someone’s looking down at us , laughing his pants off, while spreading snow everywhere but in Whistler! There is SO much snow at UBC right now!!! How ridicoulos is that?!! Hrmph!

BOOM! So…now that’s out of my system!

Actually, I’m not one to complain…Iv’e already gotten more days riding this season than I normally have in an entire year, soooooooo it’s all goooooooood!

Uhm,don’t really know where to go with this post…Well,I got a place in Bayshores with the best roommates eva, including a son of a rock star(!) I fuckin fuck fuck heart those guys – I’ve learned more Canadian “culture” this past week, than I have down in Van in 3 months…I do now know what grilled-cheese is, I have been introduced to “skateboard-on-a-bottle” and is, to tell the truth, a natural – nailed the 180, I know what biffed and beached means and get intesive Canadian slang courses non-stop, and last but not least…I’m pretty stoked on using the word stoked! Foooo Shoooo…I’m not gonna lie to you, this shiat is fo real! I kid you not..WoooooT!

The guys have also taken an active part in spicing up my life with some pretty crazy things…Including hot-tubbing with crazy tattooers, playing the drums (!), two broken ribs (from riding, that is), a bloody fight against an Asian “I-spit-cab-drivers-in-the-face” dude and his friend, amazing rollerblade trixing (is that a word?!) all over the Village for hours – people were especially stoked about my rail-session. What a sight! Yah,we’re not bored too much!

Now I also have to mention the Danish people, because they are – most of the approx 100 who are living it up here – lovely, funny, and…just being Danes! Lovin it! More will come about them, that’s a promise from me to you!!

Since the snow fell in the village, it’s starting to look a lot like Christmas! I’m gonna have a white Christmas for the first time in many, many years…Can’t even remember when my last white Christmas was. I’m looking forward to it, that’s for sure…But at the same time I get a bit sad, when thinking about being so far away from my family – for the first time since arriving in Canada I’m actually a bit homesick. Would give a million $ to go home for Christmas! Then again, I’m gonna spend Christmas in the snow surrounded by great people. I’m sure it’ll be a Christmas to remember…and maybe, if I’m very lucky, Santa will bring me a nice and warm big jacket, so I won’t have to borrow the guys’ anymore :)

They say that a pic says more than a 1000 words, so I’ll let them speak for a bit…

roommies4Roommates!

yoYooOoo! Have to make the fun you can – put on the guys’ clothes, and there you got it!

pizzaski1How I felt about the snow conditions!

happysnowDespite the lack of snow it’s still wonderful!

Christmas party @DR – UPDATED

December 14, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Last Friday I went to the traditional and annually christmas lunch at the Danish Broadcasting Cooporation. Because, as you know, DR is in a bit of a financial mess, I thought it would be a small party and not a big flashy event.

I was wrong…we started at 2 pm with a beer and some Lips on Xbox360. The plan was to eat at 3 pm, but the food was late so instead we drank way to much and got drunk before the food arrived.

Finally at 5 pm the food arrived but i was to drunk to eat and instead a drank “snaps” a delis’ danish drink.
1229108173600

As you can see from the blurry picture i was not capable of taking a proper shot.

After dinner we went down stairs to our production studios. Here DR had filled the 3 biggest studios with bands DJ’s and entertainment. I went in the biggest of the 3, where a ABBA copy band played. Here i found Kenneth Plummer the CEO of DR. Because of my condition, i had no problem going over to him buying him a beer and took a photo with him. dsc00059

After several of other embarrising things from my part, i went home after a quick pit-stop at DR’s hired “Pølsevogn”.

It’s Whistler Baby!

December 1, 2008 · Leave a Comment

The past month has been very, very long, and I have been extremely tired! Could sleep all day…But Wednesday morning – yep,for once in a looooooong time I got out of bed early – the Greyhound took me to the mountains! Now my body is full of energy and I have absolutely no problem getting up in the morning! I grew up in a country with no mountains, almost no snow…but for some reason I just feel at home up here – hard to explain in words. It’s just a feeling. A very nice feeling. Waking up in the morning, looking out the window, seeing the beautiful nature, breathing the thin mountain air…and most important, doing funny, crazy stuff with a good crew. I just love it!

When I grow up I wanna be “a person who lives in/or close to the mountains”! Maybe I should concentrate more on the web stuff in my study – working in the mountains must be possible with a job in that line of business!

Whistler is my first encounter with the North American mountains. I’ve heard a lot about it…about the snow, and in particular the powder! Well,I can say that right now Whistler most of all reminds me of an Austrian ski town in the beginning of a bad season – yep, it’s Grey, wet, and the snow is slushy with a capital S! Buuuuuut we have a lot of fun still. Playing around doing things we don’t normally do, when the snow is perfect…and the snow will come eventually, I’m sure! Once the f***ing global warming decides to take a break and send some cold weather to our side of the globe (there’s snow in Denmark rigth now, wtf?!)!

Snow or no snow (we do have some, though)…life is good! We are so lucky to have the one we have…enjoying every minute of it here!

Unfortunately I’ll be going back down to Van tomorrow evening. Really don’t want to, but something called university is calling in the distance – but I’ll be back Friday morning…And right now I’m sitting in front of the fireplace, listening to Christmas music, and preparing myself to go out with the Danish dudes tonight!

Mang, it’s all GoooooD!
